"VEXATIONS" AND "VEXATIONS EXTRACT OF"

VEXATIONS

Vexations is the plastic interpretation of the piece for piano of the same name, composed by Erik Satie in 1893.
The original piece is a musical fragment of 4 sections to be performed 840 times in a row without stopping. According to the tempo adopted by the interpreter, the full implementation of the work can last between fourteen and twenty four hours. The musical text is a repetition of a single motif and its harmonisations A1 and A2 in the form A - A1 - A - A2. The single edition created by the collective JSBJ relies on a few rules imposed by the composer. This work is a sculpture of 3360 book pages in comprising of a series of 4 photos, each repeated 840 times. The content, for its part, has been designed in agreement with the few indications given by Erik Satie. The tempo reads "very slow", photocopied images refer to a sense of depth, hubris, boredom and emptiness. At the top of the score, the composer wrote this note: "To play 840 times on that ground, it will be good to prepare beforehand, and with the utmost silence, through serious immobility." Thus, the consultation of this book plunges the viewer into a sense of torpor, illusions, frustration and infinity.
Vexations is a mystery that can only be understood and experienced better over time. This involves travel in time at least "at will, any more," as Satie wrote.
